Jean Harlow Style

Well, I'm finally finished moving and have got my internet back so I can blog again! Vintage style of course. Sadly, I missed Jean Harlow's birthday on March 3rd so this post will be of Jean in some gorgeous 1930's hats and outfits. I'm still trying to find myself a great 1930's hat! I think the first photo of Jean is my favorite. Simply stunning.

1930's Fashion on Film - China Seas

I've been on a bit of a Jean Harlow kick lately! Anyhow, I thought I'd watch China Seas, as I hadn't seen it in awhile. Wow! I'd forgotten how stunning her wardrobe is in this film! I think this movie actually has some of the most gorgeous 1930's dresses and suits I've ever seen her in! It was no surprise when I looked up the costume designer for the film and saw that it was Adrian! No wonder! I posted photos of all the outfits I could find, but there were still more I couldn't find pics of. My favorite outfit is the fully striped dress with matching hat, pictured on the 2nd to last photo. I just wish I knew what colors it was! Did you know Jean Harlow wore a wig for this film, because her hair was so damaged from bleaching? All I have to say about that is, that's one gorgeous wig!

1930's Fashion on Film - Libeled Lady

The 1930's dresses in this film are pure Hollywood glamour. Then again, how can you not have glamour when Jean Harlow and Myrna Loy are in a film together? This movie displays some amazing 1930's gowns, furs and hats. My favourite is the wedding dress Jean Harlow wears at the beginning of the film. I couldn't find a full length photo of it, but I'm sure you can imagine. A long, creamy bias cut satin gown that looked absolutely stunning on her. I will keep searching for a picture!

Vintage Cats and Dogs

I love animals, so I thought I would show off some vintage pets! Here are some classic stars in vintage clothing with some cute cats and dogs. From the top is Jean Harlow, Clara Bow, Ava Gardner, Ginger Rogers, Lana Turner and Ann-Margret. Clara Bows dog is named Duke - I just wish I knew all the other animals names!

Vintage Wedding Dress Inspiration

Wow, I'm so behind in my blogging! I will get back on track eventually. There's been so much to deal with lately! Anyways, I've decided to go with 1930's for my wedding gown. For fun I thought I would do some research and see what my favorite vintage ladies wore on their big days. Which is your favorite look? From the top we have Jean Harlow and Paul Bern in 1932. Ginger Rogers and Lew Ayers in 1934. Betty Grable and Harry James in 1943. Ava Gardner and Frank Sinatra in 1951. Lana Turner and Bob Topping in 1948. My favorite dress would have to be Lanas, but you can't beat pin up girl Betty Grables hair with that huge flower. Love it.

Vintage Starlet of the Day

Fay Wray. I watched her in the original "King Kong" the other day, and I must say she has the best wardrobe! She's so cute! Apparently Fay's famous role in "King Kong" was turned down by Jean Harlow. It's weird, I've heard of so many movies in which Jean Harlow was offered a role but turned it down. I wonder how many of those rumors are true? Anyways, Canadian born Fay was also supposed to make a cameo appearance in the 2005 version of King Kong, but unfortunately passed away before the film was finished. I would love to see some other films starring Fay. I will have to look them up! Btw, isn't that dress she's wearing in the third picture gorgeous?!

Vintage Fashion 1929

I found this picture and I had to post it. Recognize the ladies in the middle? If not, it's Clara Bow and Jean Harlow in a photo from the late 1920's film "The Saturday Night Kid". All the girls are so adorable, and so are their dresses! Clara Bow's wardrobe for the film didn't fit, so she passed it on to the then unknown actress Jean Harlow, who was very grateful and apparently never forgot the favor. Obviously Clara, being the huge star that she was, must of had the most desirable and gorgeous wardrobes for her films. I love the dress Clara is wearing in the above photo, the buttons, the pleated skirt, the collar, so beautiful! All the girls look so great.

Vintage Starlet of the Day

Leila Hyams. Leila appeared in many of the early talkies of the late 1920's and early 1930's. The movie theater by my house plays old movies quite often, so last night I was lucky enough to see "Freaks" and "Dracula" on the big screen. Leila Hyams stars in "Freaks", the 1932 film about a traveling circus and the scandals that take place within it. The film was actually banned for 30 years because it disturbed movie goers at the time. Anyhow, the beautiful Leila stars in this film which role was originally intended for Jean Harlow. Ultimately MGM decided not to cast any major stars in this movie. I thought Leila was great and would love to see more of her! Unfortunately only 4 of Leilas films have been released on dvd, which is quite sad when you find out she appeared in over 50 films! Apparently 48 of her films are still stored away and have never been released.
Interesting fact: Leila used to carry around a little satin bag attatched to her garter, which contained extra stockings in case the ones she was wearing got damaged:)

Vintage Workout Wear

I started going to the gym again, and it's got me thinking. What did ladies used to wear while working out or playing sports? Say during the 40's or 50's. I know that "working out" wasn't what it is today, but it did exist. Marilyn Monroe used to lift weights, and Jean Harlow & Ginger Rogers were avid golf and tennis players. In the photos I found, it looks like the usual shorts & tops worked just fine. But wow, I wish I looked that cute while at the gym! These modern day lycra outfits just aren't the same. I do have some absolutely adorable 1940's shorts that I could wear, but I wouldn't wanna chance getting them all sweaty! Not to mention the weird looks I'd get! Haha, but I'm used to that wearing vintage clothing all the time. No pain, no gain:)

1930's Swimwear

Yes, another vintage swimsuit post! But how could I not brag about the 1930's bathing suit I just got! This is my oldest one yet! It's black, and it basically looks like a long tank top made out of wool. Here are some photos of Joan Blondell, Claudette Colbert, Carole Lombard and Jean Harlow, in the swimwear of the time. I must say, Jean's suit is pretty scandalous compared to the other ones! They're all pretty cute though. I love the little belts that were worn with them! Which swimsuit is your favorite?

Vintage Makeup Style

Jean Harlow or Marilyn Monroe? Which vintage make-up style do you prefer? The 1930's thin eyebrows and rosebud lips? Or the 1950's full eyebrows and luscious lips?
