Vintage Starlet of the Day

Vera Ellen in one of her many gorgeous dancing outfits. I love the polka dot gloves. I've been so sick the last couple weeks, so I haven't been able to find any real life clothing. As soon as I'm healthy though, I plan to make up for lost time!

Vintage 50's Lacey Dress

I bought this gorgeous dress last week! I also picked up a beautiful black 2 piece 1950's suit, and a light pink 60's dress. I met this sweet older lady and she gave them to me for a really good price! They fit perfectly too. Now I gotta work on finding shoes to match the clothes.

Ebay Dress of the Day

Wow, I haven't been on the computer forever, life is too unstable right now and I don't like it!
Anyhow, I know this isn't a dress, but its adorable. So this is my Ebay Favorite Clothes post or something like that. Starring a super cute vintage halter top that I wish was mine! With a built in bra too. I love it.

Vintage Starlet of the Day

Marilyn Monroe of course. It's about time I put Marilyn in here. I could do a blog just featuring her clothes, or shoes for that matter. And the reason I chose this picture? Those platforms! Check them out.

Vintage Garden Party Dress

I love finding treasures like this. Found this one a thrift store not looking like much on the hanger. But when I got it home and put it on the dress form, wow! Gorgeous, and with a big crinoline underneath it would be even better! I swear, decent vintage clothing is getting so much harder to find at thrift shops.

Vintage 50's Prom Queen

I can dream, can't I? Another dream would be that this dress wouldn't have a huge rip in it! But only I have to know that, because I covered it up with a flower!
It works pretty good doesn't it? For $6, I figured it was worth the try. Another idea I had would be to remove the top layer of tulle/netting over the bodice. Then it would just become a strapless gown, which would be nice except that the layer underneath is a little faded...I think I'll leave it for now. More clothing pictures to come!

Sparkling Vintage Shoes

Lucked out with these 1970's wedges. Not only did I find silver ones, but I found the exact same pair in gold! One set I found at a vintage clothing store, and the other at a thrift shop! So weird! And they're both in amazing condition. Crazy shoes.

Ebay Vintage Item of the Day

Gorgeous vintage 1930's dressing gown/robe. Even better because I won it! Finally. All the clothes I've bid on in the last couple weeks I've been outbid, but this one is all mine. The mannequin is kinda creepy, but it didn't scare me away. This is my oldest item now. Yay!

Vintage Clothing to Die For

Feast your eyes on this 1950's bombshell. I bought this gown a little while ago at a local vintage store for under $50, and it's perfect! No, it doesn't fit me, but I have tiny friends who can model it. I swear I've never found a dress so beautiful and in such great condition. I will probably sell it, but I don't want to! I want to display it on my wall, haha.

Sparkling 60's Vintage Purse

Picked this little purse up at a cheap vintage shop last weekend.
Looks sixties.
I love sparkly accessories...
I could never say no...
Then I found a silver box shaped one, and a clutch covered in fake pearls!
Ooh, and I also got a really cool hat box that's like a mini suitcase!
So now I have something to carry them around in.

Vintage Starlet of the Day

Betty Grable. What a doll. You gotta love the 1940's 2 piece bathing suit. It's easy to see why Betty was the favorite pin-up girl of WWII. She's absolutely adorable. Did you know soldiers actually painted pictures of her on the noses of their bombers? Now that's fan dedication.

Vintage Space Style

The elegant Jane Jetson.

This is actually the first picture I've seen of her wearing something other than her usual purple mini dress, so I had to post it.
Jane was basically a sweet housewife and mother who did absolutely nothing.
Their robot did all the housework, and dinner came from a vending machine.
So she was basically a lazy space wife.
She looks great though.

Love the sixties futuristic fashions.

Ebay Dress of the Day

Beautiful and unique, orange colored 1940's taffeta gown. What I wanna know is, unless you're hooked up to an old movie stars wardrobe collection, where do you find clothes like this? Even at expensive vintage stores and estate sales, I've never seen anything quite this glamorous.

Vintage Clothing Miracle

Finally!
Im back!

After not having a computer for 2 weeks, I can now post again.
So I'm gonna try and do a post overload the nest few days.
I'm starting off with a pic of this 1940's dress, because I found one almost identical at Value Village last week.
Yes, I said Value Village, it's true.
Never have I found anything this good there.
Now I probably won't find anything there for the next 2 years, but this was worth it.
The only difference is mine is more of an acetate fabric, where is this one looks satin-like.

Gorgeousnessssss....

Vintage Starlet of the Day

Carole Landis in 1940. It was almost impossible to choose a picture of her, as each one is more stunning than the next. Did you know Carole chose her screen name after her idol Carole Lombard? She looks like perfection, maybe that's why she was voted best dressed screen star in 1943.

Ebay Dress of the Day

1940's swing style dress. This is so simple yet so gorgeous. I actually just bought a vintage 40's dress this morning, and it's stunning. It's a miracle too, the waist was bigger than 24! Usually everything I find thats earlier than 1950's is so tiny. It's sheer though, so I can't post a picture till I get a nice slip to go under it:)

Vintage Style

Once again, I'm not usually into the vintage "style" or retro "style" in clothing.
Usually they're just cheap rip offs, trying to be trendy.

This dress however, I love.

It was on some vintage inspired fashion website, but you can tell all the dresses were very well made, and quite beautiful.
They're pricing was pretty crazy though, for non-vintage items.

Crazy but stunning.

Vintage Silver Shoes

As I was pouting over how people were outbidding me on Ebay (for all the vintage shoes I wanted)...I had a brilliant idea.
Why not just go down to one of the local vintage stores, and try and find some cute shoes?
I've been online so much I almost forgot that real stores existed!
So I found these silver beauties that fit me perfectly.
I wonder what year they're from...the girl at the shop said prob 1950's, but I had thought 1960's...
If Carol from Dandelion Vintage reads this, let me know what you think!
xoxo

Ebay Dress of the Day

This is just beautiful. 1950's swing style dress. I love the light colors & ruffles, and check out the lace on the sleeves. Now just add some white gloves, and what kind of shoes? White heels? That might be perfect.

Gold Vintage Purse

Ooooh, check this out. It's gold, it's sparkly, and it's mine! Found it at this hole in the wall vintage shop for less than $10. It's always the places I never think I'm going to find anything at that I end up getting the most stuff!

Vintage Gloves

Got my first Christmas present last night! A sweet friend of mine got me some gorgeous vintage gloves. I'm guessing they're 1950s, but I could be wrong. Either way I'm so excited, and can't wait to wear them. I've gotta start wearing more of my vintage collection. There's no sense in having all those beautiful dresses just hang in my closet, and this is the perfect time of year to do so. I will post the pics to prove it too.
Hope everyone has a great Christmas!

Ebay Dress of the Day

Love this red 1940's dress, but I still can't find my red vintage dress!
Why is it so hard to find a red one that fits me?
Life is unfair.
And I wanted one for the holidays. I've been looking for months too!
Ok, enough.
I did pick up a bunch of 70's shirts this weekend, if thats any consolation. Really funky, with big collars and crazy patterns. So fun.
Oooh, and I found a bunch of old school baby barrettes, all brand new in packages, so I grabbed those as well.
Last but not least, I found some very lovely gloves.
White, in good condition, with a little flower pattern on them.
Very ladylike.

Vintage Starlet of the Day

The goddess Rita Hayworth. I just watched Cover Girl, which has so much fabulous 40's fashion. Gorgeous suits & hats all over the place. Pure elegance. Not to mention the beautiful dresses.

Vintage Christmas Angel

My precious thrift shop angel. Complete with lights inside her dress. My favorite part of her though is her messy little bleached hair do.

Vintage Dress Finds

Wow, its time for me to post!

Ok, so I've found a ton of new things in the past week.
First the white little mini dress in the photo.
It looks really 60's, Im wondering if it was maybe some kind of unifom?
A little short for a nurses uniform, but the label says "White Cross" so you never know.
Just dont bend over.

Found a tye dyed 60s mini dress.
Super cute.
Also a long, green flower print Hawaiian dress. It's never too early to get ready for summer.
Not to mention a bunch of brand new, vintage white nylons to go with my new dresses.
And just my size.
Perfect.

Dating Vintage Clothing

Found this dress the other day, and it's in perfect condition! Looks like its barely been worn. Anyone have any guesses what year this could be? When I first saw it, I thought it looked very late 50's or early 60's...but maybe its more recent. It's very lightweight, and has some newer stitching inside, so who knows. Anyhow, I love it, but it's not my size like usual.

Ebay Dress of the Day

Wow. I would love to have the dress & matching jacket combo. So elegant! Too bad this one isn't my size. I will be on the lookout.

Green Vintage Style

Is it a jacket or dress, or both? Who knows. The main thing is I bought it! The boots look great, but I think I'm gonna do white tights with chunky black heels. Wow, I am so behind in blogging, I've gotta catch up! So, this was my latest purchase. But there were many more this past week....I will post pics asap!

Hot Pink Vintage Dress

Check out this hot pink vintage dress I recently found. It looks early 60s to me, but I could be wrong. The condition is perfect, I couldnt believe it. It looks like it was never even worn. Unfortunately it was just a little too tight for me...I mean, I could get into it, but I just couldn't move. So I guess I will try and sell it.

Ebay Dress of the Day

This is hot, and yes I would definitely wear it. Square dancing dresses are so underrated! I actually wanted to order this one, but it was the wrong size! With the puff sleeves, the circle skirt, and the matching belt, you can't go wrong.

Vintage Dresses Up for Sale

Well, I finally put some dresses up for sale on Ebay.
Nothing much, but I need to get rid of my ever growing collection. I can barely find my way through my room anymore!
There's a cute leopard print coat as well, which I wanted to keep, but it's too big for me.
I posted a photo of the blue housewife style dress, or maybe its more of a cocktail dress.
Who knows.
Anyhow, I have tons more to put up.
Oh, and for some exciting news, I found 2 pairs of beautiful vintage heels today. One is open toed and the other is closed. They're both gold and they're both gorgeous.
My Ebay dresses

Vintage Platform Shoes

Check these out.
The first thing I thought when I saw these was disco! But I may be way off.
Carol of Dandelion Vintage says they may be from the 1940's. Which would make me even more proud. The older the better.
They're quite beautiful, the detailed little beads are so gorgeous.
These platforms must have got some good use back in the day, but are still in great condition.
So Im thinking of selling them. Unfortunately I have no clue what size they are. I'm thinking they're about a size 6?
Does anyone know how to figure out shoe size? I have no clue. The label probably got worn off decades ago.

Vintage Starlet of the Day

The many shades of Stella Stevens in "The Nutty Professor". What a doll. I think my favorite is the white mini dress, with the matching hair bow of course.

EBay Dress of the Day

Why? Because I won it, and it's sooo cute. Bought it from - OhLaCherie. I just put up a few vintage items for sale so far, not much yet, but hopefully more this weekend. It's just hard to part with the things I love....but they do need good homes, it's a waste to have them just hanging in my closet all lonely.

I Want A Red Dress

Yep.
I've been looking all over, and I can never find a nice vintage red dress that I like.
I'm hoping to find one before the holiday season, but it seems to be a bit of a challenge.
I can find every other color, I have tons of pink, lots of burgundy, but no red!
So this weekend I found an absolutely adorable crushed velvet, deep red vintage dress.
So gorgeous.
I didnt even bother trying it on, because it looked like it might fit me. At $4, I'll take my chances.
When I got home I put it on right away, except there was one problem, it wouldnt fit over my hips! Which I thought was weird, because I don't have big hips.
So I was disappointed, but whatever, I'll just add it to my collection of things to sell. I went to go throw the reciept in the garbage, but just happened to look at it first....and what does it say? "Kids Dress - $4.00".
Um, yah, I'm smart like that.
In other news, this is a pic of my favorite Ebay Dress of the day. Why, because its red! Though I do think the sunglasses are 100% wrong with the dress. Contrary to popular belief, "boho" sunglasses do not go with everything. Don't even get me started.

Vintage Little Black Mistake

So I met this woman this weekend, a little strange but whatever, she claimed to have a huge collection of vintage dresses she wanted to sell. I went over to her house, and after she blabbed her life story to me I finally got a look at some of the clothing. She did have a ton of stuff, but only a few quality items. She showed me this gorgeous little black dress she had purchased in 1960, and it was adorable. I looked it over quickly and it seemed to be in pretty good shape. The zipper worked fine, there were no holes that I noticed, and it was so cute! She sold it to me for $15, which I thought was pretty good. Anyways, last night I was hanging it up in my bedroom when I noticed a huge stain! How could I not have noticed it before?! It was on the back of the dress, near the bottom, so I guess I just didn't look down that far. It's a really weird stain too, it looks almost faded...it's a strange reddish, almost burgundy color against the black. It's not obvious from far away, but up close it looks awful! I tried washing it, but it did nothing. What is this stain?! I've never seen anything like it before! Does anyone have any idea?

Stunning Gold Vintage Shoes

Forgive me for not posting pictures of my actual finds but my computer has been having major problems the past few weeks, and its really frusterating!
Anyhow, I found some amazing heels. I looked online, and surprisingly I found a picture of almost identical shoes!
The only difference is mine have a lower & wider heel, and they're even prettier.
The other day I walked into this old thrift shop that I had never been to before, and there they were!
I have been looking for a glamourous pair of vintage shoes like this forever!
I'm not sure what year they are, maybe 50s? They're a stunning gold color. So of course I grabbed them and ran up to the till asap.
I didn't even bother trying them on because I would have bought them anyway, this is like art for me!
When I got home I thought, wouldn't that be funny if they actually fit? So I tried them on, and just like Cinderella, they were made for me.

Ebay Dress of the Day

Love this. Obvioulsy it was longer and someone shortened it. Funny cuz I'm in the middle of doing the exact same thing. I found a bright yellow dress almost identical to this green one, but it was floor length. So in order to make it cute and more wearable, I shortened it into a mini dress. Now I just have to finish the hem. Oh, and notice the white shoes in the pic? Where do people find white vintage/vintage looking shoes like that? I've been looking for white forever! I swear it's the hardest color to find. Oh, and I'm still on a search for a crinoline.

Friday, October 13, 2006

Vintage Volume

I decided that I need a crinoline.

I've got all these these vintage 50s day dresses that need a little oomph.
Of course they look nice the way they are....but they could go from absolutely adorable to absolutely STUNNING with a crinoline.
I forgot what a difference it could make.

I remember wearing crinolines when I was a little girl, with shiny maryjanes and a white faux fur coat.
Awww.
Gotta find some pictures of that!

Anyhow, I will scope out the thrift shops this weekend, and hopefully I can find one!

Vintage Starlet of the Day: Mamie Van Doren

I got bored of Ebay's vintage clothing so I decided to look for real inspiration on a few early starlet websites. I also decided that for today I'm gonna go with Mamie Van Doren as my favorite. She has so many different clothing styles, and everything I saw, I would LOVE to have. I must say, she can pull off the classy and trashy styles quite nicely. This look however, is pure class. That coat & dress - WOW.

I Don't Discriminate Against Any Decade of Vintage

Though its rare I come across anything from the 80s that I have to have. Until I found this little dress...I couldn't resist. All I know is, my social life better get a whole lot more exciting so I can actually wear some of these dresses out!

To All the Vintage Clothing Sellers

Does anyone else find it hard to part with these items?

My vintage clothing collection is getting ridiculously big, and I have vowed to start selling some of it.
Especially the pieces that aren't my size and I would never wear.
I can't help though, I still want to keep them!
It's like owning a beautiful piece of history, or art...
So my challenge is to keep half, and sell half.
I'm really gonna try...
*sigh* what a dilemma...

Ebay Dress of the Day

Ooooh, ahhhh, I love plaid. Though my version would be with braids and maryjanes for ultra cuteness.

Garage Sale Goodies

Heres some stuff I picked up, and all PINK! I love it. A cute little vintage flower vase, and a sweet little ashtray. Awww.

Garage Sale Dress #1

Ok, here it is!
The gorgeous yellow 50s cocktail gown I found on the weekend!

I think its my favorite...its in perfect condition too. Surprising, I know. I'm always like, "ok, wheres the rips, wheres the stains"...

I always wish I knew who the dress originally belonged to, and what the lady was like, where she bought it, where she wore it.....each vintage piece should come with a book, stating its previous owners and their stories.
It should be a rule.

Ebay Dress of the Day

The new definition of adorable.

Garage Sale Extravaganza

Decided to check out random garage sales this weekend and give the thrift stores a break. Sunday was a flop, but Saturday was my day.
All I have to say is garage sales are so random!!
The 2 that I thought would be really good were full of garbage dumpster leftovers, and the ones that I almost didn't go to were incredible!
Found a beautiful vintage long wool winter coat, with fur trim. The woman I bought it from collected 1950s clothing, and had bought it in England. Luckily for me she was moving to Costa Rica, and getting rid of all her warm clothes.
I also got 3 gorgeous (of course) 50s dresses.
One pink long lacey floor length gown, one yellow knee length cocktail dress, and one cute day dress almost exactly like the photo shown.
I can't wait to wear them.
My best friends wedding is coming up....I think I may wear one of the cocktail dresses, and then go all the way and get my hair done in 50s fashion as well! Somebody s gotta keep syle alive!

Random Vintage-ness

Wow, I haven't posted anything forever! I guess it's because I've been too busy shopping! Ha, yeah right, I wish! More like working.
Anyhow, I have picked up quite a but of randomness from my recent thrifting adventures.
First I found 2 cute, and decent condition Tiki Mugs. How could I say no at 75 cents each?
Next I found a super stylish pair of red cats eye sunglasses, which I have been wanting forever! Finally!
I've had many pairs over the years, but if you're anything like me, well, you either leave them in restaurants or they somehow end up breaking within a month or two.
Now for the clothing.
Found a 60s era long halter neck evening gown, bright pink, with silver sequins that fit me perfect. Fabulously tacky.
Found a white (no stains!) 70s peasant style long gown - gorgeous.
Also found a paisley pattern 60s/70s secretary style dress with a matching belt.
Its becoming so hard to find quality vintage! So I am so proud of my finds!!
I swear, 99% of the clothes I look at are either ripped or stained! Such a waste! Take care of your clothes people!

Vintage Clothing Imposters

Ok, usually I'm quite the vintage snob.

I hate it when new clothes try to look "vintage", because it defeats the whole point!
I want the real thing!

Anyhow, when I saw this new little dress from H&M, I had to give in.
I love it.

No, its not real vintage, but it is unique...and adorable...and it doesn't shout out, "Im trying so hard to look vintage, when deep down Im just trendy crap!"
No, it's more like, "I'm very cute and well made, and just happen to look a little like vintage."

So I approve, and yes, the dress did speak to me.

Have a Cocktail, 50s Style

Speaking of cocktail dresses, hows this for gorgeous? No, I didn't make it, I wish I was that talented though. There's no way I'm gonna dare sew with organza and satin. If I did, the outcome would probably look like some kind of circus/prom queen gone wrong disaster.

Tuesday, September 05, 2006

If You Want Something Now, You've Gotta do it Yourself

Another weekend of no luck at the thrift stores!
How could this happen again?
Life can be cruel.

Anyhow, I did pick up some vintage sewing patterns, and they are gorgeous.
Lets just hope I can say the same for the clothes after I make them.

It's been awhile since I've made anything, but the patterns look pretty straight forward.
I bought 3, two of them are for 60s mini dresses, and one is a 50s cocktail dress.

Ooooh yah, I'm excited.
I'll post pics if they turn out!
