In 1959, all you had to do to lose weight was lay on these vibrating pads, and voila! Can you imagine? If it were only that easy. It's funny, today there are some just as ridiculous items for losing weight! I love how the woman doing the arm weights is wearing her high heels. Now that's discipline!
I just love vintage scarves! Scarves in the 1940's were not only pretty to wear, but they were useful too. During WWII, scarves were the perfect accessory for female factory workers. What better way to hold back your hair? My grandmother and her best friend worked in an airplane factory during the war - the top picture I posted is of her friend. Although I don't know if she'd wear that pretty scarf to the factory!
I just got these cute vintage shoes from the 1930's! They're more of a casual 30's shoe, and are great for everyday use. I was hoping I could find some in black as it's the color that goes with everything, but I wasn't going to pass them up just because they were blue. It's hard enough to find shoes this old that I can fit my feet into!
Vivien Leigh was born in Bengal, British India in 1913. Her family later moved to London England, where Vivien kept herself busy as a theatre actress. She made her film debut in 1935 and the rest is history. Did you know Vivien was offered the supporting role of Isabella in "Wuthering Heights"? She refused it though, as she only wanted the lead role which had already been given to Merle Oberon. Luckily, not too long after that she landed the lead in "Gone with the Wind", which won her the Oscar that year. Fun fact - Vivien was known for her love of cats, and had many during her lifetime.
I just added this pretty 1930's dress to my web store! I absolutely love the color, it's somewhere between peach and pink. It reminds me of something Ginger Rogers would have worn in the 1930's, so I looked and found this photo of her wearing a dress with very similar material. Isn't she the cutest?
I'm so excited it's already November, because that means it's almost winter time, and winter time means I get to bring out my big vintage coats! I have a weakness for faux fur 1960's coats. I don't know what it is about them, but I can't stop buying them. I guess if I think about it, they're soft and warm, they always look stylish, you can wear them with almost anything, and usually one size fits all. I posted some pics of 1960's faux fur coats, I have one identical to the coat in the first photo. I think it's my favorite coat right now.
I kept writing 1960's for this film because all the dresses look very 60's style! It's hard for me to remember it made in 1956. I guess this movie really did predict the future, at least for fashion! Anne Francis is adorable in this movie, wearing her sparkly mini dresses and futuristic gowns. My ultimate favorite outfit she wears though, is the cute little blue dress with an attached hood shown in the last photo. I want it!
I'm still waiting for hats to make a comeback. Will they ever? I would love to go into a beautiful millinery shop and pick out a hat for each one of my outfits. I have a few vintage hats from the 30's-50's that I wear now and then. But I have to be wearing the right vintage dress and hairstyle, otherwise it just looks wrong. I posted some pictures of 1920's hats, which I absolutely love. Check out the top photo of all the ladies at an outdoor party, only one of them isn't wearing a hat. Shame on her!
I love Halloween! I have to admit though, I never put that much effort into my Halloween costume. I think it's because I dress up every other day of the year, so I just don't have the energy when it comes to Halloween. I love it all though, the decorations, the pumpkins, costumes, parties, candy....I would love to find a vintage Halloween dress like the first 1930's photo. Can you imagine? Gorgeous!
I've been on a bit of a Jean Harlow kick lately! Anyhow, I thought I'd watch China Seas, as I hadn't seen it in awhile. Wow! I'd forgotten how stunning her wardrobe is in this film! I think this movie actually has some of the most gorgeous 1930's dresses and suits I've ever seen her in! It was no surprise when I looked up the costume designer for the film and saw that it was Adrian! No wonder! I posted photos of all the outfits I could find, but there were still more I couldn't find pics of. My favorite outfit is the fully striped dress with matching hat, pictured on the 2nd to last photo. I just wish I knew what colors it was! Did you know Jean Harlow wore a wig for this film, because her hair was so damaged from bleaching? All I have to say about that is, that's one gorgeous wig!
I thought I'd post these pics of gorgeous vintage purses. The first pic is from a 1952 magazine and the other two are from 1956. I think I love them all! Click on the photos for a larger view.
I love how these 1950's kitchen designs all have color themes! It's not just the cupboards, but the appliances too! I don't think I ever see colourful kitchens nowadays. It's either white or stainless steel, which is too boring for me. I'm a yellow kitchen kind of girl, it's such a happy color. Which one would you choose?
I posted some lipstick magazine advertisements from the 1920's to the 1960's. I especially love the 1930's ad showing a blonde, brunette and redhead. Maybe it was to show that the lipstick looked good with any hair color. Which ad is your favorite?
